KELSO REVIEW - SATURDAY 17th OCTOBER 2009

By Bill Harvey

More Likely stars for Tullie and Mania at Kelso

Ailie Tullie’s eight-year-old mare More Likely (5-1) lifted the £10,000 Ship Inn, Dalkeith Handicap Chase (for the Marshall Trophy) in gallant style under Ryan Mania at Kelso on Saturday 17 October.

Mania (20), one of the rising stars of the northern jump scene, gave More Likely a superb front-running ride and she stayed on gamely to seal her fourth course victory by half a length.

Ryan gave her a tremendous ride. She loves Kelso and I’m thrilled with her,” said the elated Duns permit-trainer, who also bred More Likely.

Ulster trainer Jimmy Lambe is enjoying a memorable year and Skylancer (5-1), Canadian Blaze (11-8 fav) and Nocturnal Knight (5-2) clinched a 48-1 treble for the Armagh yard on a glorious autumnal afternoon.

Peter Monteith and Phil Kinsella teamed up to win the Peter Doyle Handicap Hurdle with Cast Iron Casey at odds of 7-1 beating the Lambe-trained Hawksbury Heights by a nose in a thrilling finish in front of a 4000 crowd.

Silk Drum (4-9 fav) impressed in the beginners’ chase for Howard Johnson, Denis O’Regan and Graham Wylie and the four-year-old grey looks a smart recruit to fencing.

Haddington teenager Alex Voy won the Betfair Training Series Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle on the Roger Fisher-trained Mystified (7-2 jt fav).

Keith Braithwaite (Rough Quest), from Galashiels, won the 17-runner Borders Barmy Army National charity event, kindly sponsored by Susan and Peter Roden of Mitchell Glass.
