Ewart & Whillans Seal Borders brace at Kelso evening fixture
James Ewart’s Quick Will (10-1) and Alistair Whillans’ Storm Kirk (7-2) sealed a Borders brace at Kelso’s annual evening fixture on Wednesday 28 April.
Quick Will won the Charlesworth Group Novices’ Handicap Chase under Harry Haynes, bravely beating the Lucinda Russell-trained 11-10 fav Phone In, to clinch Ewart’s first success of the 2010-11 jumps campaign.
Whillans’ Storm Kirk, ridden by his son Ewan, looked a smart prospect in winning on his debut in the Radio Borders Cash For Kids-sponsored bumper in front of an 1800 crowd.
Hexham permit-trainer David Carr and veteran amateur rider Andrew Richardson teamed up to lift the £12,000 John N. Dunn Group Ltd / Sol 20 Handicap Hurdle as Coastley (9-2) stayed on well to beat the 2-1 fav Pontop by 5 lengths.
George Charlton’s Hazeldene (9-2), backed from 20-1 to 6-1 with totesport in the morning, landed a major gamble under Ryan Mania in the Justin & Susan Greig Wedding Celebration Handicap Hurdle, bolting up by 6 lengths.
Saveiro (5-2) gained a deserved victory for Alan Swinbank and Brian Hughes in the Jedforest Deer Park Maiden Hurdle.
Howard Johnson’s 18-1 shot Top Dressing, owned by Musselburgh Racecourse chairman Group Captain John Prideaux, sealed a 65-1 double for Ulsterman Hughes in the attheraces.com Handicap Chase in great style by 9 lengths.
Tuesday evening’s fund-raising event at Kelso raised a grand total of £8000 for the Borders Branch of the Multiple Sclerosis Society.
